Before There Were Time Zones...

I guess I never really thought of this before, but...what did they do before there were time zones? Well, they had handy charts like this to tell them the time in various places.

 
So when it's noon in Washington DC, what time is it where YOU live? Here in Kansas City it's 10:49am...now is this some great ephemera, or what?

Hidden paper treasures...

After looking at my art pieces or glue book pages, people sometimes ask where I get the graphics I use, or the handwriting or the illustrations. You might think I have a huge ephemera collection...actually I have a huge book collection.

Here are a couple of inexpensive, innocuous little titles that would be easy to walk past...

 

They almost sound like we're back in high school, but not so fast...open them up and flip through the pages...

For $4.50, the 1876 Common School Book Keeping yields pages & pages of different ledger examples, with lots of different styles of entries and handwriting

 

The 1882 Guide to Correct Language is priced at $5.00. This grammar book is chock full of beautiful graphical headings, illustrations and printers ornaments.

  

Surprised? At the end of the 1800s, many books were highly decorated, no matter the subject. Old business books can be a treasure trove of graphics, illustrations and just plain humor.

I found each of these books in antique stores, where prices can be ridiculous. But there's not much of a collectors market for old accounting and adult grammar books, so the prices are usually very reasonable.

By the way, with about 300 pages between these 2 books, that's 150 pieces of paper, so a little over $0.06 per sheet. I do the math with books all the time.

More Gluebook Pages...

I have been doing a GREAT job keeping up with my gluebook this month. Since the holidays are over I seem to have soooo much more time to myself. Here are the latest pages....

Emergency Rations...

A few days ago I threw out a couple old gluesticks that were both empty. At the time I realized I had just one left. Did I go buy more glue immediately? You already know the answer to that.

 
My last gluestick is empty...and I am on my last small jar of gel medium - and it's a little dry. I managed to do a couple gluepage spreads before the gluestick died.

 
There are about 7" of snow on my car and going out to pick up a couple new gluesticks is just irrational - right? I will attempt to dig out in the morning and get provisions (really, just glue).

Gluebook Sunday

I had a lovely time this afternoon, just playing in my gluebook.

I have a lot of images and paper left over from various classes, plus all of the vintage paper from dictionaries, music books, etc. So, rather than cleaning out my paper bins, I started pulling things out and glueing them down.

Here's my afternoon's production:

 You probably recognize some of the imagery - like I said, lots of paper left from classes. Luckily they're all pictures I like so it's fun to use them a variety of times, just to see what I can come up with.

Congratulations to Linda at Lambsworld - she's the winner of the January Collage Challenge!  I'm sorry that I'm a couple days late in announcing this; I kept missing the official name-drawer, my son Jack.
